The company that owns the security mailing list Bugtraq, a security sector institution, has pledged to revive it as “an asset to the community”.
Shawn Duffy, global head of advanced attack and preparedness operations at Accenture Security, said in a publication in February, “we are working to stabilize the platform and get it back into healthy operation. As such, there may be some brief interruptions.”
“We will be implementing changes and improvements so that it can regain its status as a valuable asset that many of us must come and enjoy.”
Accenture Security’s desire to keep the list alive was mentioned in a publication by Brian Martin aka Jericho, a longtime member of the security community and one of two people who maintained a site known as Cyber ââsquirrel which serves to debunk the common myths about the so-called cyber warfare.
Martin is a close associate of Richard Forno, a well-known figure in the American information security industry.
According to Martin, the site was purchased by Symantec during the acquisition of the SecurityFocus site in 2002. Symantec was then acquired by Broadcom in November 2019. Accenture purchased Broadcom’s Symantec in April of last year; it is a company better known for management consulting than for security.
Martin tweeted that Bugtraq was shutting down on January 15, pointing out that it had been around for 9,933 days or 27 years, two months and 10 days.
Prior to that, he said he contacted SecurityFocus and Symantec in December 2019, after seeing that the last post on the list was dated July 26, 2019, but had not made contact and tweeted about. of his efforts.
Martin then said someone noticed his tweet and contacted him, saying there was an ongoing discussion on the list.
He said he wrote about the context of Bugtraq to remind people how much of a valuable resource it has been since the early 1990s.
âInfoSec is full of heroes who work behind the scenes, fight the good fight and try to make things a little better. They deserve more recognition than they get. This is just one example of that. So thank you very much, for your work in helping to keep the historic list alive, âhe said.
